The first SCVS meeting of 2007 washeld on Sunday, January 14th at 4:00pm. The location for our meetings was changed! We'll met at Edge of the Woods, a natural foods grocery in New Haven. Members were advised to arrive early or stay a little late to get some shopping done,as Edge is a great place to get hard-to-find items. The meeting featured vegan personal chef Mary Lawrence giving a talk and un-cooking demonstration entitled "Raw Resolutions." Trust us, her raw recipes were awesome! As usual we also had a vegan potluck meal, and members were asked to please bring something to share (or pick something up at Edge when they arrived). |

Have a great summer! There will not be a monthly potluck dinner in July & August. Attendence during the summer is predictably low and with other events happening throughout the state we've decided to hold off until September when we'll resume our monthly meetings in North Haven. In the meantime, please take a look at other events coming up around the state. The website of the Northern Connecticut Vegetarian Society, which you can get to by clicking on their banner at the bottom of the main page, has great listings. Please contact us if you have any questions or suggestions for events in the fall.

The April meeting of SCVS took place on Sunday, April 9th, at 5:00pm. This month we'll have a special guest from the great white north. Well, not that far north. But at least from Northampton, MA. Vegan photographer and all around digital guru Derek Goodwin will be joining us to give a multi-media presentation about two of his projects; Veganica.com and VeganRadio. Veganica is an online gallery of vegan creative output. Artists of every sort display their works on the site and many items are for sale as well. VeganRadio is a terrific program that is broadcast locally out of Northampton and also available on the web as a podcast. So this will make two vegan podcasters we've had visit SCVS! That's got to be a record somehow. So please come and enjoy Derek's talk. As VeganRadio would say, "You know you're jonesin' for some tofu!"

No guest speaker this month but lively conversation is always to be had. It's been a cool May, but lets break out some summer-time food and enjoy the flavors of the spring! |

January marks the first vegetarian restaurant "hop" being put together by the organizers of the three vegetarian societies. This idea germinated around the time of the December social gathering at China Pan Restaurant. We hope to gather once a month on about the third Thursday for dinner at different restaurants around the state. At first we are going to focus on vegetarian restaurants and later we hope to work with veg-friendly establishments on special menus if we can get a large enough group dining regularly. The January restaurant hop will be at Alchemy Juice Bar Cafe in Hartford on the Thursday the 19th starting at 6:00pm. Alchemy is open until 8:30pm so drop by whenever you can after work or school. These hops will be starting off quite informal and everyone will order and pay separately from the menu. Alchemy is at 203 New Britain Ave and their number is (860) 246-5700. Check out their website for directions and the menu. Mmm! |

Click here for the original Announcement email . SCVS, in association with the Northern Connecticut Vegetarian Society and the newly formed Northeastern Connecticut Vegetarian Society, we are organizing a social gathering at China Pan Restaurant in Farmington. China Pan is not a vegetarian-only establishment, if only we could be that lucky! But they do have an extensive vegetarian selection featuring vegan mock-meat dishes and vegetable entrees. Vegan citrus spare ribs anyone? The restaurant is located at 1600 S East Rd., Farmington. That's near the West Farms Mall with easy access from Rt. 9 & I-84. It's in the back corner of the plaza with Borders Books & Music. Click Here for a map . |

Click here for the Announcement email. Click here for the Followup email. On November 13th, 2005 SCVS met for its monthly meeting.
We had a "Compassionate Thanksgiving Potluck" and encouraged
everyone to bring a dish. Stuffing? Sure! Mashers?
Sure! Pie? Do we even need to answer that? While
all this food might have sent some of us running for the sofa afterwards,
SCVS member Jenn Mezzio had other ideas! She talked to us about
Yoga.

The meeting was at 4:00pm at Edge of the Woods (379 Whalley Ave., New Haven - EotW @ Google Maps).
Rather than a full pot-luck meal, this meeting focused on
Erik's talk. Some light refreshments and finger-food (all vegan)
were available after Erik spoke. Popular among them were Josh's
"Cali Wrap" and "Georgia Wrap", as well as Zaac's cookies that ate like
a meal.
SCVS' thanks go out to Erik for coming to speak on such short notice, and to Edge of the Woods for their hospitality. |

Over the winter months of 2004 SCVS met, but unfortunately there are
records missing of the original announcement. It was during this time
that vegetarian historian Rynn Berry came to speak about vegetarian
myths. Mr. Berry discussed the myth that Adolph Hitler was a vegeterian
and also spoke about the argument for why Jesus should be considered a
vegetarian. A potluck meal was shared by all and Mr. Berry sold and
signed copies of his books. . Also during the winter of 2004 SCVS and our dear friends at the Northern Connecticut Vegetarian Society (cleverly named "NCVS"), met for a joint social meeting at Alchemy Juice Bar Cafe in Hartford.
There were some communication problems but Alchemy stepped up was able
to feed the hungry vegetarians and a connecticut vegetarian winter
tradition was started.

On October 21st, 2004, author and activist Erik Marcus (Vegan.com) came to Yale curtesy of the Yale College Vegetarian Society (Yale.edu) to

Amazon.com as well. Erik also spoke to the Northern Connecticut Vegetarian Society (NorthCTVeg.org) that week. |

On September 19th, 2004, SCVS members gathered at Locket's Meadow (LocketsMeadow.com),
a riding center in Bethany, where Kathleen and David provide year-round
riding services and also take care of rescued PMU horses. More
information about these horses and their ordeal can be found at PMURescue.org. |
