I enjoy the simple pleasures in life. I like walks on the beach, reading a good novel, and hearing that one of America’s largest factory farms has filed for bankruptcy. Pilgrim’s Pride has seen its stock lose 98 percent of its value this year, as rising grain prices have made the company bleed red ink — 800 million dollars’ worth this quarter alone. (Thanks Mark & Jim). Link.

Maryland chicken farmers are finally starting to be held accountable for messing up the Chesapeake Bay. This article provides some great details, even though it manages to repeat one of the more moronic memes about meat and protein:
State officials have started to realize that there are consequences to being able to sell skinless, boneless chicken breast for just over $2 per pound when virtually no other protein source with so little fat is that cheap, Mr. Winegrad said.
Somebody needs to tell Mr. Winegrad that dried organic beans are a great protein source that can cost 50 or even 75 percent less than factory farmed chicken.
The piece also features this quote from an industry flack:
We’re also already doing our part when it comes to the environment.
Especially when it comes to messing up the environment. Link.

Holy crap…I just found this at random. Amazon is currently selling the bargain paperback edition of Peter Singer and Jim Mason’s The Ethics of What We Eat for a measly $6.29 with free shipping available. This book is mandatory reading for any vegan who claims to be informed about food production.
Pack in a copy of my new Ultimate Vegan Guide and you’ve got some great vegan reading for the holidays.
I’d jump on this deal immediately, since I can’t imagine Amazon has too many copies to sell at this price. Link.

NBC Nightly News ran a nice two minute segment on the history of pardoning turkeys, with footage featuring the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good contained our friend Paul Shapiro making a comment about animal cruelty in the industry, the bad was Sarah Palin giving her little chat with a turkey being slaughtered right behind her, and the ugly was people bowling with frozen turkeys at an ice rink. As Hunter S. Thompson once said, when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
Happy thanksgiving, everyone. Link.

The New York Times has a disturbing and informative blog entry about the worldwide collapse of tuna populations. It’s beyond my understanding how people can continue to eat sushi given how dire the outlook for tuna stocks has become. Link.

Here’s an unusual and deeply moving essay about a guy who had a tropical fish, and actually started paying close attention to the animal. As someone who owned a betta in high school, this story was heartbreaking to me; every few months I think of that fish and wish I’d been conscious enough not to buy him. (Thanks, Derek). Link.
