welcome
Welcome to the official website of the Northeastern Connecticut Vegetarian Society.
The Northeastern Connecticut Vegetarian Society provides a space for vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores to meet, exchange ideas and recipes and share delicious, compassionate and healthful meals together. We have been organizing potlucks and presentations in Storrs, CT since 2005.
We meet monthly and would love to have you join us. You should always feel welcome to attend any of our events, and if you have time to volunteer, we could use the help!
upcoming events
We usually try to hold a potluck each month in various locations. Please see below for scheduled potlucks. We ask that people bring a vegan dish to share for 4 to 8 others and a monetary donation of $2 to $8, but this is entirely optional and no one is ever turned away.
The following is a list of upcoming events:
- October 19th at 6 PM - At the Wrench in the Works at 861 Main Street in Willimantic Connecticut. We will have a vegan potluck followed by a slideshow entitled "Vegetarianism in Art" presented by Mark "Mathew" Braunstein. If you can, please try to bring a vegan dish to share and money to donate to the Wrench in the Works. All are welcome!
The Northeastern Connecticut Vegetarian Society is privileged to welcome Mark Braunstein back again for this exciting event!
Mark Mathew Braunstein is the author of the books Sprout Garden and Radical Vegetarianism, and of many articles about vegetarianism in magazines such as Vegetarian Times, Natural Health, Whole Life Times, Backpacker, and Animals' Agenda. He also writes about art, including articles in Iris: Notes on the History of Art, Theosophy, and the cover story "Vegetarianism in Art" in Vegetarian Times.
He has spoken at national conferences such as Whole Life Expos, NAVS' Vegetarian Summerfests, and animal rights Action for Life. And he has lectured locally at Trinity, Wesleyan, Conn College, Univ of Hartford, U-Conn Storrs, WCSU, URI, RISD, Brown and Yale, and to local vegetarian groups, including twice to the venerable Northeastern Connecticut Vegetarian Society.
Mark presently is the curator of campus artworks at Connecticut College, and he teaches Photoshop workshops nationally and courses locally. Previously, he was head of slides and photographs at Rhode Island School of Design, and the assistant editor of Art Index.
On October 19th, 2008, he will present a digital slide lecture "Vegetarianism in Art", an expansion from another broader lecture "Animals in Art", which was funded by a grant from the Culture and Animals Foundation, and first presented at the Spoleto Animal Rights Festival held at North Carolina State University. The images drawn primarily from European and American painting will include hunting, fishing, dairy farming, factory farming, animal husbandry, animal slaughter, and animal sacrifice. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
